There are not many bookstore marketing courses, and the ones that exist look very different from each other. Some are live classes run by booksellers for booksellers. Some are start-up programmes for people who have not opened yet. Some are general retail courses that happen to fit a bookshop, and one is a trade association’s toolkit library. This guide puts seven real options side by side, compares them on format, price and what you get as shown on each provider’s public page as of October 2026, and says honestly who each one suits, including our own course and its limits.
Who is looking for a bookstore marketing course
The right option depends on where your shop is today:
- Owners of an open independent bookshop. You compete with online retailers on price and convenience, so you need reasons for people to come in: events, recommendations, a community and a local reputation.
- People planning to open a bookstore. Marketing is one item on a long list that also includes a business plan, a lease, fixtures, opening inventory and a point-of-sale system.
- Booksellers and event or marketing staff. You need skills for your role, such as running author events, writing shelf-talkers or planning the store’s social media, and perhaps a credential that shows it.
- Specialist, used and online sellers. You need to reach a narrow audience of readers who care about your niche, often well beyond your street.

Each option: what it is good for, and what it is not
Professional Booksellers School: Event Management
The Professional Booksellers School (PBS) offers sustained professional development for independent booksellers, with courses designed and taught by experienced owners, managers, buyers and event staff. Its Event Management course is aimed at owners, booksellers and key staff who want to build a successful store events programme. The 2026 schedule included classes on author events, partnerships, community events, school-facing events, marketing and analytics, partnering with publishers and creating a publicity kit. The course costs $395, runs as live Zoom classes with office hours and homework, and students who complete and pass all the homework are certified. Space is limited to 40, only one staff member per store may enrol for certification, and stores with students must be members of their regional trade association or the American Booksellers Association. The page says the next live course begins in January 2027, with registration opening in November 2026.
Good for: a store where events are central to the marketing, and a staff member who will run them for years. Less suited to: an owner who needs to start this month. It follows a fixed live schedule and expects regular homework.

Professional Booksellers School: Store & Operations Management
The same school’s Store & Operations Management course covers the operational side of an independent bookstore, and its 2026 schedule included a marketing overview, creating your own marketing plan, and websites and digital marketing, alongside budgets, staff and store systems. By the end, students have produced documents such as a mission statement, budget, staff handbook and a marketing plan. It costs $395, runs live on Zoom each spring with registration limited to 30 students and one person per store, and registration for 2027 opens in January 2027. For booksellers who cannot follow a live schedule, PBS also sells Independent Study classes; the page says most are $65 for 30 days of access to the recording, and a free PBS membership is needed to buy them.
Good for: an owner or manager who wants marketing planned together with budgets and staffing, taught by people who run bookstores. Less suited to: someone who only wants marketing. Most of the course is operations.
The Bookstore Training Group: Launching Your Bookstore
The Bookstore Training Group’s online programme is for aspiring owners whose business plan and funding are already in place. Its ten topics run from store design, fixtures, opening inventory and planograms through merchandising, bookstore computer systems, and buying and pricing to driving traffic to the store, building a loyal customer base and organising daily operations. The page lists $695, or $595 for ABA members. The same company sells Foundations for Success, an online business-planning programme ($495, or $420 for ABA members), and a three-day, in-person workshop in Florida whose topics include marketing to gain customer loyalty ($1,895, or $1,695 for ABA members).
Good for: founders who want one bookstore-specific programme that connects layout, stock, displays and marketing before opening day. Less suited to: an established shop. Marketing is two of ten topics, and most of the value lies in opening decisions you have already made.

American Booksellers Association: Education Resources
The ABA is the US trade association for independent bookstores, and its BookWeb site describes education among the services it provides to members. Its Education Resources library lists toolkits, templates and handouts that can be filtered by level and by track, including an Events & Marketing track with items such as an event safety toolkit, a staff-picks review database and an off-site event checklist. Its marketing pages add seasonal campaigns such as Indies First and marketing calendar handouts.
Good for: member stores that already know what they want to do and need templates and campaign material to do it faster. Less suited to: anyone looking for a structured course with a beginning and an end. It is a library, not a curriculum.

Wharton on Coursera: Omnichannel Retail Strategy
A three-course series from Wharton Online at the University of Pennsylvania: Retail Marketing Strategy (9 hours), Managing Human Capital in Retail (10 hours) and Retail Digital Supply Chain (9 hours). Coursera lists about four weeks at ten hours a week, a shareable certificate from the University of Pennsylvania, and inclusion in Coursera Plus.
Good for: owners who want a strategic framework for competing with online retail, and who enjoy university-style material. Less suited to: bookshop tactics. It is about retail in general, so events, handselling and book clubs are not on the syllabus.
Google on Coursera: Attract and Engage Customers
Part of Google’s Digital Marketing & E-commerce Professional Certificate, this course covers search engine optimisation, search engine marketing, display advertising and the marketing funnel in four modules, at about one week at ten hours a week. Coursera shows it as free to enroll, with a shareable certificate.
Good for: a bookseller about to spend money on search ads or rebuild the shop’s website. Less suited to: anything bookstore-specific; you will translate every lesson to your shop yourself.
How to choose a bookstore marketing course
- Are you open yet? If not, start with start-up training; marketing a store that does not exist yet is a small part of the job.
- Who will do the work? If one staff member runs events, a live course with certification for that person may be worth more than a course for the owner.
- Can you keep to a live schedule? Live classes give feedback and peers; self-paced courses fit around shifts.
- Is it written for bookshops? General retail courses teach real skills but leave out events, book clubs, handselling and author relationships.
- Do you need a credential? Bookseller certification matters for a career in the trade; for an owner the result in the till matters more.
- What is the total cost? Add membership requirements and subscriptions to the course fee.

Where our course fits, and its limits
Our bookstore marketing course is for the owner of an independent shop that is already open and needs more reasons for readers to come in. It is short: 20 video lessons, about 2.2 hours in total. It starts with the fundamentals (target audience, market research, unique selling proposition, branding, positioning and the marketing mix) and then covers customer relationships, data, segmentation by reading preferences and genres, influencer marketing with book bloggers, authors and book clubs, content such as reviews and reading recommendations, social media, local partnerships with libraries and schools, customer retention, online presence and e-commerce, book signings and author events, book clubs and reading communities, and personalised recommendations from your staff. It costs $79 as a one-time payment, with lifetime access and a certificate of completion, and three lessons are free to watch without signing up.

What it is not:
- It is not accredited and carries no continuing-education credits, and its certificate is not a bookseller certification like the one PBS awards.
- It is video only, with no live classes, homework review or peer group.
- It is taught in English.
- It is short. It gives you a framework and ideas to apply, not months of coaching.
- It does not cover opening a store, buying and inventory, store design or finances. For those, look at the start-up and operations options above.
If you also sell gifts, stationery or other products, our comparison of retail marketing courses online covers the wider retail options.
What any bookstore marketing course should cover
- Why someone would visit your shop rather than order online: your selection, your staff, your events and the feel of the store.
- Events: author signings, launches, school visits and community events, and how to measure whether they pay off.
- Recommendations: staff picks, shelf-talkers and handselling, which are marketing even when they do not look like it.
- Community: book clubs, reading challenges and partnerships with libraries, schools and local organisations.
- Your online presence: a website or online store, a Google listing, email and social media that point people back to the shop.
- Bringing readers back: loyalty, newsletters and personal recommendations.
Frequently asked questions
Are there free bookstore marketing courses?
A few free options exist. Google’s Attract and Engage Customers course on Coursera is free to enroll, though it is not about bookshops. The Bookstore Training Group offers a free merchandising training video, Bookstore Merchandising Made Easy, for anyone who works in a bookstore. ABA members also have the association’s resource library and campaign assets.
Is there a certificate for bookstore owners?
The Professional Booksellers School offers certification in specific areas, such as event management and store and operations management, for students who complete its live courses. Coursera courses give a shareable certificate, and our course gives a certificate of completion.
How long does a bookstore marketing course take?
Among the options here: about 2.2 hours for ours, roughly ten hours for the Google course, about four weeks at ten hours a week for the Wharton series, and around five months of weekly live classes for the 2026 run of the PBS Event Management course.
Should I take a marketing course before opening a bookstore?
Usually not first. Before opening, the business plan, location and opening inventory matter more. Once the doors are open, a marketing course helps you turn the store into a place readers return to.
