Marketing Courses for IT Services and Software Companies, Compared (2026)

Most marketing courses are written for consumer brands or for marketers in large companies. An IT services firm, a managed service provider (MSP), a software development agency or a small SaaS company has a different problem: technical people selling technical work to buyers who are not technical, through long decisions, referrals and recurring contracts. Searching for “marketing courses for IT companies” returns product marketing certifications, MSP marketing memberships, free inbound courses and short video lessons all mixed together. This guide compares six real options on format, length, price and certificate, using what each provider’s page showed as of October 2026, and says who each one suits. That includes our own course and what it does not cover.

Who is searching, and what each needs

  • MSP and IT support owners: you sell recurring contracts to local businesses. You need a steady flow of qualified leads, a way to stand out from the other providers in your area, and a routine that keeps existing clients renewing and referring.
  • IT consultancies and software development agencies: you sell projects. You need sharp positioning, case studies that prove outcomes, and a pipeline that does not depend on the founder’s network.
  • SaaS founders and product marketers: you sell a product. You need research, positioning, pricing, launches and sales enablement, and often a credential that helps your career.
  • Freelance developers and IT consultants: you need to be seen as the expert, with a website and content that turn visitors into enquiries.

The first two groups usually need practical service marketing; the third needs product marketing, which is a separate discipline with its own certifications. Knowing which group you are in removes half the options straight away.

Details and prices come from each provider’s public page as of October 2026 and change often; confirm on the provider’s page before buying. Product Marketing Alliance showed us prices in euros, so the page may show a different currency where you are. LinkedIn Learning did not show a subscription price on the course page, so none is quoted.

Each option: what it is good for, and what it is not

Pragmatic Institute Market: product marketing with a known framework

As of October 2026, Pragmatic Institute’s Market course page lists $1,295 “One Time +Taxes” and three formats: an in-person course (7 hour instruction, PMC certification, tools, templates and examples, peer community), corporate training for a whole team, and live online sessions (7 hour course, morning or afternoon, 1–2 sessions). The syllabus covers buyer personas and the buyer’s journey, messaging matrixes, marketing plans and metrics such as lifetime value and customer acquisition. The page strongly recommends completing Foundations first, and the Pragmatic Product Marketer certification requires Foundations, Market and Launch.

Good for: product marketers and product managers in software companies who want a shared framework their team already knows. Less good for: a 10-person MSP or agency. The certification path means several courses, and the material is about marketing a product, not winning service contracts.

Product Marketing Alliance Product Marketing Core: the deepest on-demand option

The Product Marketing Core page lists 11 modules, 19+ hours of content, 10 coursework tasks, 47 templates and 110 exam questions. The modules run from research, pricing and personas through positioning and messaging, go-to-market, sales enablement and onboarding. The individual certification was shown to us at €1,199 as a one-off payment with lifetime access to the certification content and an official certification if you pass the exams; the page describes it as CPD and CIM accredited. A Pro+ membership at €150 a month, billed annually, includes this and other certifications.

Good for: SaaS product marketers, or founders doing product marketing themselves, who want the whole role in one structured program with an exam at the end. Less good for: IT service firms whose problem is local leads and contract renewals rather than product launches.

MSP Marketing Edge: done-with-you marketing for MSPs

Paul Green’s MSP Marketing Edge is not a course in the usual sense. The pricing page describes a membership that supplies marketing content every month, a three-step lead generation system and marketing tasks broken down into step-by-step instructions, with support from its team. As of October 2026 it lists a 30-day free trial, then USD $199 a month (UK £149 + VAT), no contract, cancel any time with 30 days’ notice, and it is “Strictly limited to one MSP per area”. The home page also describes a shorter Standout MSP System for working out a clear USP “in just a few hours”.

Good for: MSP owners who want content and a system to follow rather than a course to study. Less good for: IT consultancies, software agencies or SaaS companies, because it is built only for MSPs, and for anyone who wants a one-time cost, because the main offer is a monthly membership.

HubSpot Academy Inbound Marketing: free and content-led

HubSpot’s Inbound Marketing Certification Course is labelled “FREE Certification Course” and lists 1 certification, 9 lessons, 24 videos, 7 quizzes and 4 hr 53 min. The page says it teaches creating content that educates and nurtures leads through the buyer’s journey, lead nurturing, and using automation and AI tools, and it names small business owners among its audiences.

Good for: IT firms that want to attract leads with useful content instead of cold outreach, at no cost. Less good for: IT-specific situations such as explaining technical services to non-technical buyers or partnering with vendors; you adapt a general method yourself.

LinkedIn Learning B2B Marketing Foundations: Positioning

Ken Rutsky’s course lists 1h 4m, intermediate level and a release date of 4/30/2018, with 5 quizzes, an exercise file and a certificate of completion. The page says it covers targeting, the difference between benefits and business value, and writing benefit and positioning statements for B2B products and services. Access is through a LinkedIn Learning subscription with a 1-month free trial.

Good for: a focused hour on messaging, the weakest point of many IT companies. Less good for: anything beyond positioning; it is one piece of the puzzle, and it was released in 2018.

How to choose: a short checklist

  1. Service or product? If you sell contracts and projects, choose service marketing (our course, MSP Marketing Edge for MSPs, HubSpot’s inbound course). If you sell a software product, product marketing programs (Pragmatic, Product Marketing Alliance) fit better.
  2. Do you need a credential? A product marketer applying for jobs benefits from PMC or Product Marketing Alliance certification. An owner needs leads more than letters after a name.
  3. Course or ongoing help? A course teaches you to do it; a membership hands you content and tasks each month. Decide whether you want skills or supply.
  4. Total cost over a year. Compare one-time prices with monthly fees multiplied by the months you will realistically stay.
  5. Does it teach outcome language? The most common IT marketing mistake is describing tools instead of the problem they remove. Look for lessons on positioning, case studies and talking to non-technical buyers.
  6. Retention and referrals. For recurring-revenue businesses, keeping clients matters as much as winning them. Check the syllabus covers it.
  7. Try first. HubSpot is free, LinkedIn Learning and MSP Marketing Edge offer trial periods, and our course has four lessons you can watch without signing up.

Where our course fits, and its limits

The marketing course for IT services and software companies is built around one idea: most IT companies market their tools instead of the problem they remove. The course page lists 21 self-paced lessons and a duration of 2.2 hours, for a one-time payment of $59 with lifetime access and a certificate of completion. Four lessons are free to watch without signing up, including the introduction, positioning and the 4Ps.

Twenty of the lessons are teaching lessons, between 2 and 10 minutes each: target audience, market research, unique selling proposition, branding, positioning, the marketing mix, integrated marketing communications, customer relationship management, data-driven marketing, segmentation, thought leadership and content, social media, industry partnerships with vendors and technology providers, website and search optimisation, client retention with a real-life example, reputation management, case studies and success stories, industry events, and running workshops and training as marketing. The 21st item is a short guest-speaker spot rather than a lesson.

Our course page, October 2026: 21 lessons, 2.2 hours listed, $59 one-time, four free preview lessons.

What it is not:

  • It is not accredited, not a technical certification and not a vendor partner program. The certificate is a certificate of completion from Easy Marketing School.
  • It does not go deep into product-led growth, such as trial-to-paid funnels for SaaS. For that, a product marketing program or a SaaS-specific resource is the better pair.
  • It does not supply monthly content or do the marketing for you, as MSP Marketing Edge does; you apply the lessons yourself.
  • There is no exam, graded coursework or live instructor.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best marketing course for an IT company?

It depends on what you sell. Service firms (MSPs, consultancies, agencies) need positioning, case studies, referrals and retention; software companies selling a product need product marketing. As of October 2026, the options above range from free (HubSpot) to $1,295 plus taxes for a single Pragmatic Institute course.

Is product marketing the same as marketing an IT services company?

No. Product marketing covers research, positioning, pricing and launches for a product. An IT services company sells people’s time and expertise, so trust, proof and long client relationships matter more than launch plans.

Can a technical founder learn marketing from a short course?

Yes, the core ideas are not complicated. The hard part is applying them consistently: describing services as outcomes, publishing case studies and following up with past clients. A short course gives you the structure; the results come from doing it every month.

Do I need a certificate to market my own IT business?

No. A certificate helps when someone else will judge your skills, such as an employer. For your own business, the measure is qualified enquiries and signed contracts.
