Customer acquisition and retention courses compared: win customers, keep customers, free and paid options

Customer Acquisition and Retention Courses Compared (2026): Free and Paid Options

For most small businesses, two numbers decide the year: how many new customers you win and how many of them come back. Courses on customer acquisition and retention range from a 36-minute free lesson set by an email platform to a five-hour university course on customer lifetime value, with subscription libraries and short paid courses in between. Some are about strategy, some about analytics, and some are really about email and loyalty programmes. This guide compares the main options as of October 2026 on length, price and certificate, says who each one suits, and is honest about our own course, which is the shortest of the group.

Who is looking for a customer retention course

  • Small-business owners (shops, studios, clinics, service firms): you want more repeat customers and fewer one-off buyers, and a simple way to see whether it is working.
  • E-commerce and lifecycle marketers: you need email, SMS, loyalty and churn tactics you can put into automations.
  • Analysts and students: you want customer lifetime value, customer equity and the measurement side, with assignments and a certificate.

Each option: what it is good for, and what it is not

University of Maryland: Customer Value, Acquisition, and Retention (Coursera)

The most analytical option here. Taught by Pallassana K. Kannan, the course teaches you to distinguish customer lifetime value, customer equity and the customer relationship, and to use customer data to build loyalty and retention strategies. Five hours, three modules, 17 assignments, free to enroll, part of the Advanced Digital Marketing Specialization.

Good for: understanding what a customer is worth and how to decide what to spend winning and keeping one. Less suited to: an owner who wants ready-made retention tactics more than concepts and calculations.

Coursera: Fundamentals of Customer Acquisition Management

A two-hour, one-module beginner course offered by Coursera itself as part of its AI-Powered Customer Success Specialization. It covers why acquisition matters, how branding affects engagement across the marketing funnel, acquisition cases from different industries, and analytical tools to measure acquisition efforts.

Good for: a short, structured look at the acquisition half. Less suited to: retention; it is not the focus.

CXL: Customer Retention Course

Six lessons, three hours, with a certificate included. The page lists building retention strategies that raise lifetime value, finding out why customers churn, using email, SMS and loyalty programmes to drive repeat purchases, measuring retention and its revenue impact, and designing the customer experience. You can take it through a CXL subscription or buy just this course; the course page does not show a price.

Good for: marketers in growth or e-commerce roles who want practical retention tactics and metrics. Less suited to: anyone on a tight budget who wants to see the price before signing up.

CXL’s Customer Retention Course: three hours, six lessons, certificate included, subscription or single-course purchase.

LinkedIn Learning: Customer Retention

A 50-minute course by customer strategy expert Noah Fleming on building a retention strategy and the difference between retention and loyalty (“loyalty is a symptom, and retention is the cause”). It is part of a professional certificate from ChurnZero on LinkedIn Learning and was released in 2017.

Good for: a quick process if you already have LinkedIn Learning. Less suited to: anyone who wants current channel tactics or does not want a subscription.

Klaviyo Academy: Retain customers long-term

A 36-minute beginner course from the email and SMS platform’s own academy, part 4 of 5 of its Digital marketing certificate. Lessons cover a retention marketing strategy, an annual content calendar, automated retention messages, a loyalty programme, reviews, brand community and measuring the health of your funnel, followed by a final quiz. Klaviyo Academy describes its courses and certificates as free.

Good for: online shops that want a free, practical retention checklist. Less suited to: service businesses or anyone wanting a platform-neutral view; the course comes from a software vendor.

How to choose: a short checklist

  1. Decide which half is your problem. Few new customers is an acquisition problem; plenty of first purchases but few returns is a retention problem. Many courses cover one much better than the other.
  2. Match the course to your business model. E-commerce courses lean on email, SMS and automations; service businesses need relationships, follow-up and referrals.
  3. Check whether you need the numbers. If you will be setting budgets, pick a course that teaches customer lifetime value and how to measure retention.
  4. Look at the date. Retention principles age slowly, but channel tactics change; check when a course was released or updated.
  5. Know the cost model. Free vendor courses, subscriptions and one-time purchases suit different people.
  6. Leave with one change. Whatever you take, finish with one action you will start this week, such as a follow-up message after the first purchase.

What a customer retention course should cover, whoever teaches it

  1. Why customers leave: the moments after the first purchase where most are lost.
  2. Follow-up: what to send or say after a first purchase or visit, and when.
  3. Loyalty and referral programmes that reward behaviour you actually want.
  4. Reviews and community, which help keep existing customers and win new ones.
  5. A simple CRM habit: one place where every customer and every contact is recorded.
  6. Measurement: repeat-purchase rate, churn and customer lifetime value, reviewed monthly.

If a syllabus only covers discounts and email blasts, it is teaching promotion, not retention.

Where our course fits, and its limits

Our customer acquisition and retention course is a primer: three video lessons, about 30 minutes in total, on strategies for gaining new customers, how to increase customer retention, and the basics of customer relationship management (CRM). It costs $3.99 as a one-time payment, with lifetime access and a certificate of completion, and the first lesson can be watched free without signing up.

Our course page: $3.99 one-time, lifetime access, certificate of completion, three lessons with one free preview (October 2026).

What it is not: with three lessons it is the shortest course here and an introduction, not a programme. It does not teach customer lifetime value calculations (the University of Maryland course does), email and SMS automation in depth (Klaviyo and CXL go further), or churn analytics. It has no assignments, and it is not accredited and carries no CEUs or college credit. It suits an owner who wants the core ideas in half an hour before choosing where to go deeper. For worked examples, see our articles on retention strategies that outperform chasing new shoppers and building a simple customer lifetime value model.

Frequently asked questions

Should a small business focus on acquisition or retention first?

It depends where customers leak. If first-time buyers rarely return, fix retention before spending more on acquisition; if almost nobody finds you, acquisition comes first. Most businesses need a little of both, measured month by month.

Is there a free customer retention course?

Yes. Klaviyo Academy’s Retain customers long-term is free, and the University of Maryland and Coursera courses are free to enroll on Coursera; check Coursera’s page for its certificate terms.

Do I need CRM software to improve retention?

Not at first. A spreadsheet with every customer, their last purchase and your last contact is enough to start following up consistently. Software helps once the list is too long to manage by hand.

How long does it take to learn customer retention basics?

Between about 30 minutes for a primer and five hours for a university course with assignments, according to the providers’ pages. Applying it to your own customers is the longer part.
