Search for a social media marketing course and one results page mixes three very different products: free certifications from software companies, long professional certificates for people who want a job in social media, and short practical courses for owners who simply need their posts to bring in customers. Each can be the right choice, but rarely for the same person. This guide compares six real options on format, length, price and certificate, using what each provider’s own page showed as of October 2026, and says plainly who each one suits. That includes our own course and what it does not do.
Who is searching, and what they actually need
- Small business owners and managers who already post but cannot tell which posts lead to enquiries or sales. You need a plan you can keep up alongside the business itself, a view on which platforms deserve your time, and a simple way to measure results.
- Career starters and career changers who want a job with “social media” in the title. You need a credential a recruiter recognises, portfolio projects and enough depth on paid advertising to talk about it in an interview.
- Marketers adding a channel: you know marketing, but social is not your strength yet. You need strategy, current platform practice and something to show on your LinkedIn profile.
Keep your own group in mind while reading the table. “Best” depends on which of the three you are, how many hours you can give it, and whether you need the certificate for someone else or only the skills for yourself.

Each option: what it is good for, and what it is not
HubSpot Academy: the strongest free option
As of October 2026, HubSpot’s Social Media Marketing Certification Course is labelled “FREE Certification Course” and lists 1 certification, 10 lessons, 38 videos, 29 quizzes and 5 hr 18 min of content. The page names small business owners, influencers and social media marketers, and marketing managers as the audience, and it is also offered in German, Spanish, French and Japanese. You need a free HubSpot Academy account to start.
Good for: a structured, quiz-checked introduction to social media strategy, content and measuring return, at no cost. Less good for: a ready-made weekly plan for a particular kind of shop, studio or practice. The page describes a general inbound social media strategy, which you then adapt to your own business.

Meta Social Media Marketing Professional Certificate: built for a job
This Coursera program is a six-course series. The page lists the courses at 18, 18, 12, 15, 12 and 7 hours and the schedule as “5 months at 10 hours a week”, at beginner level. It is “Included with Coursera Plus”, and the visible button says “Enroll for free”. The page says the program was developed by experts at Meta and Aptly, covers Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok and more, and ends with a certification exam: completers “Earn the Meta Digital Marketing Associate Certification”. It also describes the credential as ACE recommended, which may count toward college credit at participating institutions.
Good for: career starters who need portfolio projects (a content calendar, a creative brief, a full campaign in Meta Ads Manager) and a credential with a platform’s name on it. Less good for: a busy owner. Eighty-odd hours is a serious commitment, and a good share of the program is about running Meta ad campaigns, which not every small business needs on day one.

Northwestern University specialization: a university name, less time
Northwestern’s Social Media Marketing Specialization on Coursera is also a six-course series. The page lists the courses at 8, 7, 10, 10, 6 and 6 hours, shows “4 weeks to complete at 10 hours a week”, and says you “Earn a career certificate from Northwestern University”. Like the Meta program, it is included with Coursera Plus. The skills listed lean toward strategy, integrated marketing communications and using AI tools for insight and content.
Good for: marketers who want strategic depth and a university on the certificate in roughly a month of evenings. Less good for: someone who mainly needs hands-on platform settings or a quick fix for a small account.
LinkedIn Learning: short, current and inside a subscription
Social Media Marketing for Small Business, taught by Martin Waxman, lists a duration of 33 minutes, beginner level and a release date of 9/6/2023, with a certificate of completion, 3 quizzes and an exercise file. Access is through a LinkedIn Learning subscription with a 1-month free trial. If you want a little more, Social Media Marketing Foundations with Brian Honigman lists 1h 16m and is part of a Professional Certificate from Hootsuite.
Good for: a quick, well-produced orientation, especially if you already pay for LinkedIn Learning. Less good for: depth. The course description covers goals, finding your customers online, an action plan and measuring success; in 33 minutes there is little room for platform-by-platform practice.

Hootsuite Academy: tool training, not a general course
Hootsuite describes its academy as “Free, self-paced training programs”, but the page also says you start a free Hootsuite trial to get access. The programs teach Hootsuite’s own apps; for example, “Getting Started with Social OS” is listed at 2 hrs 1 min across 8 steps, and the short courses take about 30 minutes each. The page does not say whether a certificate is issued.
Good for: teams already scheduling posts in Hootsuite. Less good for: learning social media marketing itself, independent of one tool.
How to choose: a short checklist
- Decide who the certificate is for. If a recruiter or employer will read it, choose a platform or university name (Meta, Northwestern, HubSpot). If it is for your own business, the plan you leave with matters more than the certificate.
- Count the hours honestly. Eighty-two hours at ten a week is five months of evenings. A course you finish beats a better one you abandon in week three.
- Check the platforms match your customers. If your buyers are on TikTok or Pinterest, look for those words in the syllabus, not just “social media”.
- Check how recent it is. Platforms change every few months. Release dates, “recently updated” labels and year references in lesson titles tell you how current the material is.
- Look for measurement. A course that never shows you how to connect posts to enquiries, bookings or sales teaches activity, not results.
- Compare the price model, not only the price. Free, monthly subscription and one-time payment cost very different amounts if a course takes you three months.
- Try before you pay. HubSpot is free, Coursera and LinkedIn Learning offer trial periods, and our course has two lessons you can watch without signing up.
Where our course fits, and its limits
The social media marketing course for small business owners is written for people with a business to run, not a content team. It has 23 self-paced video lessons, listed on the course page at about 3 hours, for a one-time payment of $39 with lifetime access and a certificate of completion. Two lessons are free to watch without signing up: YouTube SEO and growing on Twitter.
The lessons cover building a social media strategy and a seven-point plan, content types, paid, owned and earned media, and platform-specific practice: YouTube SEO and YouTube ad formats, Instagram SEO, Facebook SEO, LinkedIn tactics, Pinterest SEO and growing on Twitter. There are also lessons on video marketing strategy and its KPIs, a starter on Google Display advertising, social listening tools, sentiment analysis and keyword research tools.

What it is not:
- It is not accredited and it is not an industry certification like Meta’s or HubSpot’s. The certificate is a certificate of completion from Easy Marketing School.
- There is no TikTok lesson. If TikTok is your main channel, the Meta program covers it and ours does not.
- One lesson reviews social media management software “for 2023”, and the platform still called Twitter in the lesson titles is now X. Check current tool names and prices yourself.
- There are no graded projects or live tutor feedback; it is a video course you apply on your own accounts.
If you are looking for a job in social media, the Meta or Northwestern certificate will serve you better. If you own a shop, studio, clinic or service business and want one inexpensive course that covers the main platforms and how to measure them, ours is built for that. For a taste of the approach, read our weekly social media plan for restaurants or why a retail store’s social media is not turning into sales.
Career changers who finish a professional certificate should make sure their CV actually shows it; MyEasyCV can rewrite a CV around a new credential and check it against a job description.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free social media marketing course with a certificate?
Yes. As of October 2026, HubSpot Academy’s Social Media Marketing Certification Course is free and lists 5 hr 18 min of lessons with a certification at the end. Coursera and LinkedIn Learning also offer trial periods, but their certificates sit inside paid subscriptions.
Which social media marketing certificate carries the most weight?
For a job application, certificates with a platform, software company or university name on them, such as Meta, HubSpot or Northwestern, are the easiest for a recruiter to recognise. A certificate of completion from a smaller school shows you did the work, but no external body has tested you.
How long does it take to learn social media marketing?
The basics take an afternoon to a weekend: the courses above range from 33 minutes to just over 5 hours. Professional certificates take one to five months part time. Real skill comes from applying it every week on your own accounts and reviewing the numbers.
Should a small business owner take a professional certificate?
Usually not as a first step. A professional certificate is designed to make you employable as a social media specialist. An owner gets more from a short practical course, a simple weekly plan and a monthly look at which posts brought enquiries.
